Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my check engine light on?

The engine computer has seen a fault and stored a code. It could be a loose gas cap, a misfire, a bad oxygen sensor or a failing catalytic converter. The code narrows it to a system, and testing finds the part.

Can't I just read the code myself with a cheap scanner?

You can, and it's a fine place to start. A P0171 means the engine is running lean, which can come from a vacuum leak, a dirty mass airflow sensor, a weak fuel pump and several other things. Rudy uses the code, the live data and testing to find which one.

Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?

If the light is steady, you can usually drive it a short distance to the shop. If it's flashing, the engine is misfiring badly enough to damage the catalytic converter, so stop driving and call us.

How much does a check engine light diagnosis cost in Houston?

It depends on the car and the problem, and we give you the price before we start. It costs less than replacing the wrong part. Once Rudy finds the cause, you get a price for the repair before any work is done.
